The availability of dedicated PhD programs in Economic History in Italy is currently very limited. In light of this, we would like to highlight an important opportunity at Bocconi University in Milan, where candidates can pursue a PhD in Social and Political Science with a focus on Economic History.
The program offers a comprehensive first-year course on the History of Institutions: Economic, Civic, and Political taught by Guido Alfani, and an optional second-year course on the History of Pandemics taught by Mattia Fochesato. The curriculum also includes interdisciplinary training across social sciences — economics, sociology, demography, and political science — with a strong foundation in quantitative methods.
PhD candidates interested in Economic History can develop their research under the supervision of experienced faculty members, including Guido Alfani, Andrea Colli, Mattia Fochesato, and Tamas Vonyo. Graduates will receive a PhD qualification in Economic History (SECS-P/12).
The program offers five positions for the 2025-26 cohort, including four fully funded scholarships and one tuition waiver. Applications are reviewed by an internal interdisciplinary committee, and the deadline to apply is January 15, 2025.
For those interested, there are additional opportunities to serve as teaching assistants for undergraduate and master's courses in Economic History, as well as research assistant positions on active projects within the university.
Further details on the program and application process can be found here, and the admission page is available here.
This is a valuable opportunity for promising students looking to pursue doctoral research in Economic History within a broader social sciences framework. We encourage sharing this information with potential candidates.
